May 15th, 2013 saw a large and enthusiastic crowd gather at the Portland Art Museum for the Equity Foundation Women Who Lead Luncheon. Highlights of the event included the awarding of a Leadership Award to Samantha Swain and a Lifetime Achievement Award to Susie Shepherd, a GLBTQ community activist going back to the early 1970’s. Susie was introduced by recently appointed Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Beth A. Allen, herself a recipient of financial support from the Ann and Bill Shepherd Scholarship Fund. Susie regaled the audience with her wit and “stories of the old days.” A touching and emotional moment was shared by all when sportscaster Ann Schatz became visibly moved to tears when speaking of the life, and death, of Jaden Bell, a young Oregon gay youth who took his own life rather than face a daily onslaught of school bullying.
