When I think about Q Center I think about space. About how even just its existence holds space for so many of us who might not have another place where we can feel like ourselves. About how as a space, it creates opportunities for visibility, for connection, and for safety. About how unique it is as a place that brings our community together and lets us find one another, lets us see one another and be seen. And how incredibly important all those things are, and have been for so long.
We were reminded this year of what space means for our community, and how hard we’ve had to work to carve out – and keep – these kinds of spaces for ourselves where we can be out and celebrate who we are. In the days following Orlando, Q Center gathered so many of us together for a vigil to grieve those tremendous losses, and to share our fears and experiences. But it also gave us the space to feel connected with our community, to organize our responses and our actions, and ultimately demonstrate our resilience and our resolve to keep crucial spaces like Q Center safe so our community can continue to come together.
Since then, every time I walk into Q Center, or even just walk by, I see the little remnants of wax from the candles we all held and burned for those in our community who had been lost to us. And I remember the overwhelming sense of loving community that I felt on that devastating day when I looked out and saw hundreds of LGBTQ people who had come to Q Center because we all needed that kind of space.
