Q CENTER IS ALIVE AND WELL … UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT!

To the community of Q Center supporters,

Six months ago none of us knew if Q Center would survive. Today we’ve not only survived, but we’re rebuilding. We received feedback from more than 600 community members this winter and we are working to realize the vision that emerged, a new Q Center that represents our entire community – transparently, accountably, and collaboratively. We are uplifted along the way by the support of our friends: individuals, community partners, sister organizations, and foundations that have come forward in so many ways to help. Starting today, we’ll publish Q CENTER NEWS every two weeks. This is one of the ways that we’ll keep you informed and invite you into the realization of a new community center, one that belongs to all of us.

EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT NOW … WELL ALMOST

You may know about the dire financial situation that Q Center was in earlier this year. Well, with the support of community members like you, who donated money and volunteered time, we were able to right the ship. THANK YOU for hanging in there with us!

Today we have a new board of directors, a little money in the bank, and we’re working on a strategic plan for Q Center’s future. We’ve streamlined our staffing model to fit Q Center’s essential needs and financial bottom line, and we have 50 volunteers who help run our community center daily. We’re also excited in the near future to announce generous foundation funding and a talented addition to our executive staff team. On the ground at Q Center, commitment is high, optimism is strong, and hopefulness has replaced anxiety. We hope you’ll join us in a big sigh of relief!

While much has changed, some things haven’t. For one thing, Stacey Rice and Susan Kocen are still the not-so-secret superheroes at the heart of Q Center. The *eRa* program for LGBT seniors delivers community programming each week, and more than 20 support groups meet monthly at Q Center, including the Transgender Women’s Group, Youth & Young Adult AA, and Lesbians of a Certain Age. Community groups like the Human Rights Campaign and the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition convene at Q Center, as do LGBT employee resource groups like the Diverse and Empowered Employees of Portland and Kaiser Permanente’s KP Pride NW. Recent social activities include the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Bingo Night, the *eRa* Gender Café, and monthly openings in the Q Center art gallery. Check the Q Center Events Calendar for listings!

GRATITUDE, A NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS, AND NEW STAFF LEADERSHIP

It is with profound gratitude that we recognize the interim board members and advisory committee who came in during Q Center’s crisis last December. This interim board stewarded Q Center through a time when it really wasn’t certain that we would remain open. For nearly six months they met weekly to analyze what went wrong, triage events, and set Q Center on a new path. Today we are announcing a new board of directors. No longer an interim board, this board is moving Q Center away from crisis management and toward long-term development and sustainability. Their goal is to create the community center that you, our community, have told us you want.

SEE YOU AT PRIDE

While we’re thanking our friends – New Seasons Market has sponsored Q Center’s presence at Pride this year, and Pride Northwest has invited Q Center to lead the Pride Parade! Both offers exemplify the generosity of community and a shared commitment to Q Center’s future. Thank you, friends! Be sure to cheer us on in the parade, and please stop by our booth at the Portland Pride Festival.
