Transparency

As a nonprofit, Q Center’s IRS Form 990 is a public document, anyone can view it (all nonprofits have a legal requirement to make this public), and we’ve linked ours here so our community can access it easily. We believe trust is built through openness, which is why we’re committed to moving forward with stronger, more proactive financial transparency. That means making it simpler to understand how funds are raised, how they’re managed, and how they directly support programs, staffing, operations, and community care. Transparency isn’t just about compliance, it’s about accountability to the people we serve and the donors, partners, and community members who make this work possible. When our finances are clear, our community can feel confident that Q Center is stewarding resources responsibly, planning for long-term stability, and staying aligned with our mission.

Financial Transparency & How Our Funding Works

The Portland Q Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building affirming spaces, programs, and connection for LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Our work is rooted in access, belonging, and community care, and that commitment shapes both what we offer and how we sustain it.

A majority of our programs and services are free or low-barrier. This includes community gatherings, peer-led spaces, educational workshops, support circles, and cultural programming designed to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation. When fees or suggested contributions are included for certain events, they are intentional and strategic, not reflective of a departure from our mission, but part of a broader effort to sustain it.

Like most nonprofits, Q Center operates through a blended funding model that includes individual donations, grants, sponsorships, and earned revenue from select programs and events. In an increasingly competitive funding environment, where traditional public and private funding sources are shrinking or becoming more restrictive, nonprofits are being asked to do more with less while continuing to meet rising community needs.

To meet that challenge responsibly, we are actively building a more sustainable and resilient funding model. Revenue generated from ticketed or fundraising-focused events is reinvested directly into our free programming, allowing us to expand access rather than limit it.

We also intentionally support community labor within our programming model. Many of our events and initiatives are artist-led or community-led, and when possible, we provide stipends or compensation for facilitators, performers, and organizers. This reflects our belief that community care work, cultural production, and facilitation should be resourced, not extracted.

Beyond programming, we are focused on building stronger, more connected support networks across our community. This includes strengthening partnerships, expanding peer-based spaces, and creating infrastructure that allows people to not only access services, but to feel sustained by a broader ecosystem of care.

It’s also important to acknowledge that Q Center is in a period of growth and rebuilding with a new team and evolving structure. We are actively developing systems, expanding programming capacity, and refining our long-term sustainability strategy. That work takes time, iteration, and trust.

We invite the community to “watch this space” as we grow, knowing that transparency includes not only clarity about where we are today, but honesty about where we are going. Our commitment is to build something durable, responsive, and rooted in community needs, and to do so in a way that remains accountable and accessible.

If you have questions about our financial model, programming approach, or how resources are allocated, we welcome the conversation. Transparency is not just a value for us, it is part of how we build trust.
