The Peoples Pantry

Hand Up Project
Hand Up Project, established in 2016, is the only queer-led food assistance program open to the public in Portland. We're working to bridge the systemic gap in healthy food access, providing a safe and welcoming space for everyone, especially those marginalized by traditional food programs.
HAND UP PROJECT (The People's Pantry)
The People's Pantry Emergency Food Project is open to anyone who is experiencing food insecurities. We cater to both the LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC communities, both suffering higher rates of food insecurities.
Our program starts by addressing the most basic human need: food. We find providing emergency food services allows us to form a bond that turns into friendship and trust, thus more productive interactions with participants.
We pride ourselves in providing a safe non-judgmental atmosphere making certain everyone is treated with respect and kindness.
Offering a “shopping style” atmosphere is a more nutritional and healthier model catering to the individual’s personal and culturally specific needs, all while avoiding food waste from “cookie cutter” style food boxes.
